Wildlife protection districts
Overview
There are a total of 394 Wildlife Protection Areas in Korea across 15 cities and provinces, covering 916.3㎢ (as of December 2022).
What are Wildlife Protection Area?
- A colony or breeding site of endangered wildlife that requires special protection
- A stopover site for endangered wildlife with high conservation and research value that requires special protection
- A habitat or range for endangered wildlife that faces potential risks for degradation or extinction of the habitant species and therefore requires special protection
Designation of Special Wildlife Protection Area
- Legal basis : Article 27, Paragraph 1 of the Wildlife Protection and Management Act
Designated by the Minister of Environment to protect habitats for endangered wildlife
- Designated area : 1 site in the Jinyangho Lake area covering a total of 26.142㎢
Designations of Wildlife Protection Area
- Legal basis : Article 33 of the Wildlife Protection and Management Act
Designated by city mayors/provincial governors and the heads of city/county/district to protect endangered wildlife
- Designated area : 394 sites in 15 cities and provinces covering a total of 916.3㎢

Through the revision of the Wildlife Protection and Management Act (July 28, 2011), the old term “Wild Animals and Plants Protection Areas” was replaced by “Wildlife Protection Area.”
